This case features unique items from the Archives that offer a special glimpse into the nearly  100-year history  of I-House, its founding, mission, and community. These objects—like so many others in the Archives—hint at the breadth of experiences shared by tens of thousands who have called  I-House their home.

When Abby O’Neill stepped down from the Board in 2001 after 43 years of service, the Trustees unanimously adopted this resolution of appreciation in her honor.

Started in 1964, Fall Fiesta is an annual tradition that features cultural performances by resident singers, musicians, and dancers in traditional dress. Poster, 1969.

President Barack Obama sent his regards in honor of International House’s Board Chair, Paul A. Volcker, 2009.

 

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman wrote International House Board Chair, General George C. Marshall, congratulating International House on its twenty-fifth anniversary.

During WWII, International House participated in the US Citizens Defense Corps’ effort to protect civilians against potential airstrikes. Certificate, 1944.

 
 

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller gave this silver baby cup to the first child born to a couple who had met at I-House.

Mrs. Rockefeller sent this letter with the silver baby cup, “I do not wonder that you are grateful for having lived at International House,” 1927.

Mary Rowe ’49 and Henry Ross Stevenson ’29 composed the “Song of Brotherhood” to be sung by people of all nations.

 

Alumnus Burl Ives’ 1948 autobiography follows his early days in Illinois, life at International House, and his career as a celebrity folk singer.

Folk Dances Around the World features 12 songs selected by Herman “HR” Rottenberg, conducted by Yoav Talmi ’68, and performed by International House residents.
